BERT - Ballistic Evidence Recovery and Tracing system is a software tool that allows for the registration, management and identification of all evidence recovered country wide by crime scene investigation teams and recorded by evidence rooms, the electronic exchange of gun crime data between relevant actors in gun crime investigation domestically (police, registration offices and forensic agency, linking in to the necessary intelligence mandatory for tracing.)

Tracing is the tracking of firearm found or seized from the point of manufacture or the point of legal importation through the lines  of supply to the last known point of possession or destruction. It further includes a request submission and respond-generating modules to be able to launch or react to incoming international requests. 

The procedures used are based upon the European Firearms tracing manual and the procedures for police cooperation. 

BERT is further able to identify through integrated analysis trafficking channels for firearms, its parts and ammunition.
